THE INFLUENCE SOCIAL MEDIA HANDLE AMONG NIGERIAN UNDERGRADUATES IN THE CONTEXT OF SELF-ESTEEM AND COMMUNICATION SKILL ACQUISITION IN EXPLORING FACEBOOK

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to investigate the influence of communication competence
and self-esteem on students’ Facebook addiction. The sample consisted of one hundred
and ninety five respondents (90 males and 105 females with a mean age of 22.35 and
standard deviation of 3.77) who were selected using the probability sampling technique
from four departments in Peaceland College of Education in Enugu state. The
instruments administered to respondents were the Bergen Facebook Addiction Scale
(BFAS), the Interpersonal Communication Competence Scale (ICCS) short-form and
Rosenberg Self-Esteem Scale (RSES). Two (2) alternate hypotheses were formulated and
tested. After gathering of data, Independent t-test and two-way ANOVA were used to test
the hypotheses at the .05 level of confidence. The findings of the study showed that
students who reported low levels of self-esteem had higher Facebook addiction
compared to students with high self-esteem; while students with poor communication
competence scored higher on Facebook addiction compared to students with good
communication competence Findings from the study provided insights into Facebook
addiction of students in Nigeria from a geopolitical zone’s sample as implications and
recommendations were highlighted.
